Consumer Intelligence’s Engagement module takes data from our proprietary panel of mobile users and enables you to analyze and benchmark key usage metrics across apps, groups of apps, and categories. By analyzing these metrics across a time series, you can better understand how users of different cohorts are performing in relation to one another.
Select the users of either a single app, groups of apps, or an entire category and then compare their users' Time Spent, Session Count, Time of Day or number of Days Used with users of other apps, groups, or categories.
Reports
Sessions & Time Spent
Session Count Trend
View the trend in average number of sessions per user for a given app, collection or category.
Benchmark cohorts of apps by how often users open the specified app or category. For example, with this report you can get a better sense of how users of BeReal, Snapchat and TikTok open the app fewer times per day or week than the majority of social apps in the space.
Time Spent Trend
View the trend in average time spent per user for a given app, collection or category.
Select users of a cohort of popular social apps to chart their average user's time spent (in minutes) in those apps across a specified date range. This allows you to get a good sense of how users of TikTok and Instagram may be spending more time in the app compared to the majority of competitors within their space.
Notes
- Data can be filtered according to the following regions: Worldwide, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Tier 1 Western or the US.
- Data can be depicted as a line, stacked, grouped bar or stacked bar graph.
- Available in both weekly and daily granularity.
Time of Day
Time Spent by Time of Day
View the time of day where the time spent for selected apps is the lowest or highest.
The Time of Day report focuses on when users use specific apps within a given day. The Time of Day graph is broken into the 24 hours of the day and charts the percentage of an app’s users who start an active session in a specific hour across a 24 hour day. These active sessions are captured in the users localized time.
Time of Day allows you to understand exactly when users are starting to use your app. When comparing with competitors you can see if these apps are being used around the same time or if your app is hitting a demographic of users that like to use the app at a different time.
Notes
- Time of Day data is exclusively available in a Worldwide view.
- Data can be depicted as a line or grouped bar graph.
- Sessions are assigned to the hour in which they started (e.g., any session started between 8:00:00 and 8:59:59 will be attributed to the hour of 8:00am).
Power Users
For many years the industry standard for measuring mobile app user engagement has been some combination of Daily Active Users (DAU), Monthly Active Users (MAU), and Time Spent. Analyzing how often users are opening an app and how long they’re using it can paint a broad picture of how engaged an app’s user base is.
However, there are limitations to examining engagement metrics that are derived as an average of an entire app user base. Evaluating DAUs and MAUs, for example, groups the entire user base of an app into one cohort to give a simple average and doesn’t show the nuance between cohorts of app users, particularly how well an app is generating and retaining power users. This is the problem that the Power Users reports are designed to solve.
Days Used Trend
View the selected trend of days used per month for selected apps.
Days Used Distribution
View the user distribution of days used per month for selected apps.
The Days Used Distribution report is a visual representation of an app’s user engagement by the total number of days its users are active in a given month. The curve produced is particularly helpful at showing if an app is resonating with a highly-engaged group of users and whether the app is generating more power users over time.
For example, you can compare the stickiness of some of the major players in the Dating app category over a specified date range:
The Power User Curve allows you to easily see which apps have the highest and lowest proportion of highly engaged users. For example, half of Badoo users open the app fewer than six days per month leading to a curve that skews distinctly to the left.
Data is also shown in a table below the main Days Used Distribution graph. You can easily see the percentage of users that open a given app for any number of days in a month as well as the average number of days per app. You may need to scroll to the right to see all data. To see usage data broken down by month, click on the small arrow to the left of the application name; this will show you a breakdown of users of that app by month and year.
