Defining Downloads and Revenue
Throughout Store Intelligence, we use two essential metrics to chart our data; Downloads and Revenue. Generally, these figures are a good starting point for understanding the activity of your selected apps(s) and can also be used as benchmarking tools for your cohort.
At Sensor Tower we define app Downloads and Revenue as follows:
Download: Each download represents one unique install per unique user account on either store. Our download estimates do not include reinstallations of an app after an extended period of inactivity, subsequent reinstallations after uninstalling an app, or any installs by the same user on a new device
Revenue: We use net revenue to measure app earnings and also account for VAT or taxes per country. Our platform illustrates consumer spending minus 30% base fees deducted on all purchases by both stores. We capture consumer spending for in-app subscriptions, in-app purchases, and paid apps. Our platform also adjusts revenue estimates wherever a store refunds base fees to an app for subsequent subscriptions or renewals. Store Intelligence revenue figures do not account for ad spend or third-party purchases including retail goods, services, and eCommerce. For example, any consumer purchase from eBay or Amazon will not be captured as these apps are retail merchants. Similarly, services from Uber or Groupon are excluded from revenue estimates.
Find Your Way Around
Welcome to Store Intelligence! 👋 Throughout Store Intelligence, you can toggle between your preferred app store or a Unified view to see combined results for the App Store and Google Play.
At the top of each chart, you’ll notice our Date, Category, and Country filters to help narrow down your apps of interest in each module. Our App Store view also includes a Device filter to include or exclude iPhone or iPad apps.
We generate our download and revenue estimates using exclusive data models from both stores which means all categories are for the selected store. Our Unified view combines categories based on common factors. Store Intelligence data goes back to 2012 for iOS and 2014 for Android.
Our Store Intelligence product contains seven modules:
In Tops Apps and Top Publishers, you can see a breakdown of the top 10,000 apps and publishers across both stores to understand the general mobile apps market. Use Top Apps to identify similar apps (cohorts) and dive deeper into Top Publishers to pinpoint growing publishers by absolute or prior performance.
Examine cohorts further with our App Analysis module, conduct competitive research, and break down download and revenue estimates by Country, Publisher, or App. Similarly, Publisher Breakdown provides insights into the app portfolios of millions of publishers. In the Store Summary and Games Summary modules, you can see a breakdown of the various iOS/Android store categories and a breakdown of the subcategories in the Games category respectively. Leverage these insights to identify macro-level trends and compare popular markets for each category. Lastly, our Game Intelligence module allows you to measure various metrics in the Games market broken down by genres and Sensor Tower's own game descriptors.
Note: Our graphs are interactive and you can adjust plot type and date granularity using the dropdowns above each chart. You can also zoom in on most graphs by selecting the plot lines with your mouse.
